THAT SMELL

Well , the smell is gone!! How weird is that? We asked our neighbour to come and smell our house ( I know, he looked at us strange too), but it was not there when he came in. I have had a very faint whiff of it about twice, but it's pretty much gone. My fear was a rat, or even a dead cat under the house. Our other neighbours are rubbish hoarders, which I don't understand, our rubbish collection is FREE. There is at least ( and I AM NOT overexagerating) 40 rubbish bags in their yard. I think it may have been the waste disposal. If it was something dead I'm sure the smell wouldn't have dissapated that quickly.

Anyway, for all you new folks, sorry about the lack of a stitch related post, but I have been decontructing my house to find the smell. I don't often post 'off topic', so do come back, and you will get some CQ next time.

I would like to acknowledge Rissa at Rissa's Pieces for her info on beading. It helped immensley with the beading on the last paisley. I tend to just get the beads on the piece, which is kinda OK when the are intermittent, or scattered, but for the outline effect, Rissa's advice was very helpful.

I'm sure most of you have come here via SharonB, but if not, Sharon has fossicked out a bit more info on Paisley and its history. So if you have an interest in Persian Pickles, go take a look.

Paisley...again, bad smells...and bastards!

I finished up this motif last night. Margaret R refers to this as tatting in a comment. Margaret. I never did quite 'get' the tatting thing, but have found ways of making it look almost like tatting. This motif, however uses a bullion stitch, with between 20-30 wraps for the scalloped edging.

Now, there is a REALLY BAD SMELL in my house somewhere. in the kitchen/ living area. I have moved everything that can be moved - oven, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine. Checked all the drawers, cupboards and lunchboxes. HELP, where is the worst place you have found really bad stuff!!! Its is getting so overpowering that I can't stay in the kitchen long. I am feeling nauseous sitting here.

And for my second drama of the day. I watched a car being stolen today!! I didn't know it was being stolen at the time, but I am completely shocked by the brazeness (is that a word) of this man ( read as complete bastard). We were walking back to the car after soccer photos today, and I noticed the coaches 6yr old daughter at her mums car. This guy was almost up to her, and I heard him say, "I'll help you with that". She was trying to get the keys out of the door. He got into the car closed the door and screamed out of the car park. The moment I realised that this wasn't quite right was when he didn't wait for her to move out of the way. I absolutely beleive he would of run her over if she was in the way. The thing that gets me is that he looked me right in the eye before getting in the car. This was obviously a pre meditated ,not to jack Pam's car, but a car, and they just got lucky with a little girl and car keys. As soon as this car was out of the carpark, another one left after it.
I'll be off to the police station tomorrow to do a statement. I got a really good look at this guy, and I hope the next time I see him is in court.

Saturday

These first pics are of the 3rd 'paisley bauble bag' I am making. This is a better pic of the motif. I have used some holographic sequins on this ( another one of the things I would of thought I would NEVER use). They add a nice sparkle in the light. The motif needs to be 'filled in' and that empty pick piece needs something, apart from that...almost done.

These papers and Paisley fabric were sent to me by a member of the Chains of Hearts group. Vanessa doesn't have a blog or website as far as I know. In fact, I don't know Vanessa very well at all. We swapped hearts. We haven't conversed at all, and for that reason, I am absolutely blown away by this gift. This is a tru RAOK gift. I have recieved other lovely packages ( Maureen, Catherine, Sandie + goodies with heart swaps), but this was completely unexpected. Thankyou Vanessa, for your kindness and generosity.

PAISLEY RUNDOWN
Kay Susan at Smockery has completed another paisley, made from dishclothes. I kid you not!
Hideko has added some paisley to a white block. This is her flickr page where you can see two motifs .
We have also had Connie at The Scoop, Score and Deal
Linda at Chloes Place...and aren't we all glad to see you back blogging!!
Lillian at Crazy Seoul Sister
Tosh at Stitch Treasures
Kay Susans first paisley postcard done in Crewel is here. (do you need my snail mail Kay??)
Ati at Ati on the Crazy Road... is also in the paisley bauble bag swap. Here is her first bag and a sequined motif.
Finally, Janet at The Other Side Of the Fence. Janet also had an interesting post about verigated threads a bit before this one.

If there are anymore of you out there, leave a comment and I'll add you too.

Phew, that was hard work. SharonB, if you're stopping by, there must be an easy way to do this roundup business ( other than opening widows, cut'n'paste) . Speaking of SharonB, she is again looking into the purpose of blogs, and their place in todays textile world as an autobiographical record, Sharon gives some well though out perspectives and the comments left by readers are just as interesting.

A piccie to keep you going

Well, I haven't had any pics for a few days, so here is something to look at. This is the start os my next motif (sorry-bad pic). I will do a rundown tomorrow of the where abouts of all the travellers on the paisley bus, show you a pic of my next paisley bag, tell you about a wee giftee that arrived....I'm sure there is more.

more Paisley mania

Hideko at Wind From the East has added a beautiful white paisley to a block she is working on.

Kay Susans paisley is getting out of control....LOL. Kay is doing her Paisley in crewel stitches. Go and see her progress.

Rumor has it that someone we all admire just might jump on this paisley bus with us....I'll keep you posted.

I'm off to stitch on my 'Oriental' bag. No more pics of this Elizabet, it will give to much away. Lets just say, you wanted spider web roses...you've got 'em!!

History of Paisley

I found this and thought it might interest someone out there other than me.
It was posted on a flickr discussion group.

>That's true. They were stamped with the side of the fist. When you look at the side of your fist you automatically see that it's a paisley. Many of the Maharajas could not sign an official document because of the literacy rate at the time so instead this hand print method was used and it was very hard for anyone to forge it because every paisley signature was different and unique. Later on artisans in India picked up on these interesting and captivating designs and began to fill them in with designs through a method of block printing which inturn found it's way later into weaving which you commonly see in Pashminas today. When the British invaded India and ruled India for centuries they were also fascinated by the design and exported them back to Britain. The designs where copied and used in other types of western clothing eventually. Most of the paisley production was produced in the town of Paisley and exported to other parts of the world by means of the British. One way was to America where these designs started surfacing in cowboy and other western garment's motifs and lady's dresses, wall paper, furniture and so on. You are right, at the time the people of India never called them Paisley they called them mangoes as their resemblance of the fruit but if you ask modern day Indians few of them know that anymore and they call them paisley The term coined by the British as the British had such a powerful stranglehold on the sub continent for centuries until India finally won it's independence from them in the last century.
Here is the link where I found the comment. You might want to check out the paisley.

Paisley mania (updated)

Here is a wee rundown of of the peeps in the blogland who have been embroidering paisley motifs.
Linda over at Chloes Place added a single colour motif to the mirror quilt she is working on.

Lillian at Crazyseoulsister did a funky little number in blue and green.

Connie at
The Scoop, Score and Deal has done a great motif with beading around the outer edge, and I love the colour in this one.

Tosh at Stitchtreasures has done a lovely motif with some different stitches around the edge for a very effective look.

The fantastically talented Kay Susan at Smockery is in the planning stages of a paisley motif. If you are interested in visual journals, and how some artists track and develop projects, go and follow her progress. I know whatever she comes up with will be a stunner. I think maybe there should be a rule about 'first born' paisleys coming to me....

Janet at From the Other Side of the Fence left a comment. Janet has done some really beautiful paisley motifs. Oh, I'm feeling inspired all over again!

I'm sure there are more of you out there, so drop me a comment and I'll 'flog your blog'...for free even!

On a different note, I have had over 1500 visitors in the last 7 days . WOW! When I started this blog I would of been happy to get that in a year. I know most of these don't return, but I have gone from between 4-10 return visits, to up to 40 in a day.
Thanks guys. Drop comment and say hi , I would like to get to know those of you who stop by.

Card for my Mum

It is my Mums birthday on Friday ( its a biggy, but I won't say how big) so I have made her a CQ card. You might recognise this from a while ago. I tried to make a hand crafted card from start to finish 2 hrs before going out..uh uh...didn't happen, so, I have finished it up for my Mum.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM

boohoo back to WOOHOO

With the help of ktj, SharonB (she sent ktj the original email), and Julia, who provided the last vital bit of info, I have added a new bit to my sidebar! Whoa there big girl, they'll be no stopping me now...and it is working this time, I checked.
So there you have it, my 'How To...' section. Enjoy.

WOOHOO to boohoo

For those of you that read the last post , via bloglines (or similar) and came to see, and wondered "what the heck, there's nothing there". Well, I deleted it, because it didn't work! The links wouldn't link. I'm seeking more help
boohoo boohoohoo boo boohoohooo

another 'how I do'

Here is how I make buttonhole wheels. This is the best way I have found to get consistent shape and size to buttonhole wheels. I have a good eye for distance etc..but not with these, I spend all night frogging...rippit rippit rippit

CQ Origami pouch

Here is my second bag for the Paisley Bauble Bag swap over at CQN. These first two pics are of the pouch, completed, and the draw cords pulled.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the block pieced, embellished, lined and turned. You can see there is only stitching in certain areas of the bag. I will point out here that these little bags are usually made with 2 fat quarters, a patterned and a plain. They are very easy to do. As I said in a previous post , I had pieced the block because I was too impatient to wait for the instuctions to arrive. You will see as I go,which bits end up on the inside. Here is a link to show you how to do these. I will persevere with how I did this, as it was a little different. ( i found this after I had made the block!!)
Turn your block on point, plain side up, fold one side in (note where the embellishment is). It must fold far enough in so that it touches the fold on the other side.

Fold the next side in. At this point you hand sew where the two sides overlap. On this piece it is mostly the black fabric. Just sew the top two layers..mind you dont catch the back! You only have to do it along that outside flap. This forms the pocket. The bit that is face down (apart from the flaps) is the inside of the bag, so you see, I could of saved a fair whack of pretty fabbies if I had waited!!

Fold the bag as in the pic above

You can see now how the pouch will come together. At this point I hand sewed the sleeve, the turned inside out and stitched the sides up. You are supposed to do that corner thing to give a base, which I prefer, but it lost quite a bit of the stitching underneath, so I have left this one flat.

Here is this side completed, with the draw cords added. You can see how if I had machined the sleeve for the draw cord, it would of gone right across the embroidery. I hand stitched this. You can see how it should look in the pic below. That link will show you how to do the cords.

...and here is the other side, with the flap closed, and below, the flap open, with a wee note inside.

The finished size of my pouch is about 10cm x 15cm. I started with an approx 12" block. If you want a bigger bag, start with a bigger block!

Here is the inside of the bag, and that *fantastic* orange fabric. So you end up with a small bag with two pockets. this one would be alright for a night out. You would fit your lippy, phone and money card in it, no problems.
Once I got started on the embellishing it didn't go to bad. All the colour was quite freeing, I didn't really think about what I used, just went for a good contrast. I am quite happy with how this has turned out.
If you have any questions, ask away. You will find Little Mochi's instruction far easier to follow.

Another paisley

Here is another paisley motif. This is on the LOUD block. I like it, it has a 'folk' feel to it. I seem to be ripping along on this block, surprisingly. It will be made into an origami pouch, which means that , unfortunately, alot of the fabric ends up on the inside, but that does mean less embellishment. I made the block before I knew how to fold the pouch!

First paisley bag complete

Well , I can have a little happy dance (cross stitch speak for "yay I'm finished!). Here is the first bag for the Paisley Bauble Bag Swap. This came together quite nicely, I'm attached to it. It will be hasd to say good bye.....sniff.
I'm not 100% happy with the shi sha'd coin, I was trying to add 'colour', but that is not the right colours. Never mind. It was too labour intensive to frog. There is some random detached chain stitch on the gold fabric. This is actually a shot dupion silk, gold and teal. Very nice, went and got more today. It's end of line, half price.

This is the other side of the bag. This one has random fly stitch on the mid blue patch. This has been a very effective way of creating a little texture in a short time.

And here is a side view to show just how fancy I can be when I want too. I'm not an inches girl, but this is about 4" by 6" in size. It would make a nice little evening bag.
Back to elizabets bag, the deadline is looming.

blog flog

You all have to here and see Nathalies most amazing piece of art. This links directly to the post, but if you want to read more about what Nath has to say, scroll down her sidebar until you see my name, and it will take you to a translator page where her posts are in english. It's not perfect, but you get the gist.

Paisley how to

Lillian, from one of my yahoo groups asked me to explain how I do the paisley motifs, so here it is.
#I draw -freehand- a paper template. I only did a template for the large 'teardrop'. The smaller 'tail' I freehand stitched
#I pin that to fabric, which ever way I want it, or it fits.

#I then chain stitch the outline. You can use any stitch you like, back , outline, stem, but I like chain.
# I then just worked my way in. One this one I did a row of buttonhole (light blue). Then another row of chainstitch (dark blue) , a row of detached chain stitch with a bead at the point of each (dark blue). I eyeball distance for all of this. I'm afraid there is no magic formula, I just do it.
# next I did the circle in the middle, in chain stitch again. I stitched around a paper template again for this. Filled this in with satin stitch, then added the bead.
# Finally I decided what I would put in the rest of the 'space'. For this one, it was a row of feather stitch , starting above the circle and working down either side (light blue), some chain stitch up the centre, and a few french knots.
Apart from the template, I do all this freehand. I guess you could use 'press and seal', but we don't have it here, and I have heard it said that it can be difficult to get PnS out from under a heavily stitched design. If you have an opinion on how it would work for this, please leave a comment for those who are interested. Thanks.

I worked this one in pretty much the same way. Outline in chain, then I did the inner line of chain stitch (gold), THEN I put in the fly stitch (dark blue). The next bit I did on this one is the dark blue paisley shape around the flowers. This is freehand (what I would call) stem stitch. Then I just filled in all the gaps, did the flowers and french knots and did the chain stitch swirls wherever the needed to go.
I hope this helps Lillian. I would say ,once you have the outline , go 'crazy'!! just fill it in!

Paisley 'bauble' bag swap

Does it appear to you, my loyal readers ( I feel so important) that I am always starting things, but never finishing . I feel like that.

Well, here is the next project. It is a 'bauble' bag, for a swap over a CQforNewbies. Not a hundy what a bauble bag is, but this will be one!! And once it is one, I will have to get me some baubles to put in it. The criteria for this bag was that it must include paisley, which, in a *small* oversight, I forgot for the first block I made, so I am practising embroidering paisley motifs. This is one, long block, it will be folded in half, stitched up, add a drawstring, and there you go. Sounds good in theory....
I am KISSing this bag (keeping it Simple S%^&*#) . Just basic seam treatments and a few beads. I have used some of Sharon Bs 100 details for this piece. There is the buttonhole with grapes, and up and down buttonhole in a feather stitch form (loving that stitch), and other base stitches. It is looking very nice.

Here is a piccie of the other , paisley-less block. Brace yourself, its loud! I don't know what i'm going to embellish it with. Time will tell.

hearts and a squishie

I got a wonderful package today in the mail. It contained a treasure trove of goodies and a wonderful heart made by my wee friend, Tayla. You would never guess it from this heart, but Tayla is only 8!! I'm not kidding. Tayla, my darling, I am so impressed with your heart.Your feather stitch is perfect and you have done such a marvellous job with the fancy yarns. I truly love your heart Tayla. Thankyou honey, it's beautiful. And Sandie, the ribbons and thread you dyed are just lovely, they will be put to good use. I've been through the bags twice already and I still haven't seen everything. Thanks for the prints, thats something I don't have, apart from a couple that came with another heart.
This heart is for Hideko. She requested something in blue. I hope this is blue enough. Hideko commented that she liked the bead trail on my pathfinders block, so now she has one of her own. I hope you like it Hideko. I am looking forward to my hydrangea heart. I do love hydrangeas, almost as much as magnolia. Mine is just finally starting to flower, and its just gorgeous.

BLOG FLOGS

I have updated my sidebar links to include new regular reads. Go check them out. The last 11 or 12. Some great talent here.

Thanks for the comments on my spider web roses. I have decided the key to a good spider web rose is to use the polyester ribbon. It is thick and shiny and gives the rose good body. It is difficult to get the needle thru first and last, but the rest is just weaving. I also used to pull mine tighter than I do now, thinking that more weaves = a better rose, but I think loose gives the petals more defintion. I love these roses and put them on everything. They are easy, (honestly ktj!! they are).

10,223

That's the number of visits to my blog since I started. I don't check my stats obsessively anymore, every couple of weeks is a good fix. I know many of those are just fleeting visits, but I also know I have a few regular readers, so.......
.... thanks for coming, thanks for reading, thanks to those of you who have extended a hand of friendship, and thanks for coming back. I do believe that if I stopped posting I would be missed by someone, and thats a big thing for me, to actually 'believe' that, so thanks.....
